WINDOWS ON CANAL

The inaugural event of the Connect to Canal initiative

NOEC’s newest endeavor is an initiative created to make the once-vibrant Canal Street more inviting to pedestrians and families.

Concept: To invite the public back to the once-vibrant Canal Street by transforming store windows into immersive window displays showcasing the diverse artistic talents and cultural heritage of New Orleans for a three-month period beginning in January of 2025. Store owners and managers will actively participate in the process. Local artists will be commissioned to capture the city’s vibrant spirit using their own unique styles. Artists will be encouraged to use their imaginations to dream up whimsical interpretations and will not be limited to any particular theme. These displays may include interactive installations, sculptures, murals or multimedia works that engage locals and tourists alike.

QR codes on windows will invite visitors to learn about the history of the building and the artist who designed the display. Elements of historical significance may be integrated into the works to celebrate the city’s rich cultural tapestry. Plaques or augmented reality experiences may highlight key moments in Canal Street’s history, from its role as a bustling commercial hub to its significance during Mardi Gras parades. There may be a competition for best artistic installation.

Guided art tours, Artist Talks, Taste of Canal, Treasure/Scavenger Hunts, Champagne Art Strolls, and architectural tours are among the possibilities being explored with the goal of fostering community engagement and providing insight into the creative process behind the artworks.  Local schools and organizations may also participate in collaborative art projects to promote inclusivity and community pride. Environmental sustainability will be encouraged such as the use of recycled materials for sculptures, solar-powered lighting, and native plants to enhance biodiversity and sustainability.

The Windows on Canal website will feature all participating businesses and a map, and printed maps for pedestrian viewing will be distributed throughout the city. To extend the reach of the displays, digital platforms will be utilized with interactive maps, virtual tours, and social media campaigns encouraging visitors to explore Windows on Canal both in-person and online.

Major grants and matching funds will be sought to implement this first event sponsored by the New Orleans Entertainment Coalition and Connect to Canal!

The goal of Connect to Canal is to offer two interactive programs a year designed to bring families and pedestrians to New Orleans’ iconic Canal Street, celebrating its myriad of restaurants, shops, hotels and businesses. Windows on Canal will serve as the inaugural event of this initiative.
